After our Intro to Prayogshala session, we will work on building the teams. Collaboration and teamwork are among the essential pillars for building a Prayogshala. They aid in better listening and speaking habits, improve confidence levels, supplement children's learning, and aid in future employability.
Time taken:
50 mins
Resources needed per student:
• A sheet of paper (Any size)
• Pencil
• Eraser
• Paintbox, Colors, and Brushes
Objective:
The objective of the session is as follows:
Team Allocation: Dividing the students into multiple teams
Painting Your Team: An activity to bring the teams closer together
Skill(s) Focussed:
Collaboration | Teamwork | Creativity
Task 1 - Team Allocation (10 mins):
Knowing the children
Your knowledge about the children’s nature, their traits such as shyness, extroversion, and other behaviours will come in handy in forming teams of students.
Division and distribution
Divide children into groups of 3 - 5 students based on your class size. If you are well acquainted with the students, divide them in a way that there is a balance of vocal and docile kids. Each team should have children who take initiative and those who need to be pushed. If you do not know the kids beforehand, keep in mind gender equity. This should be done before the session.
Assigning the teams
Inform the students about their teams and induct every student into the team in an engaging way to ensure they show acceptance to the grouping.
Task 2 - Painting your Team:
Once the students have been divided into the teams as decided by the facilitator they can get started on their first activity as a team. This painting activity requires a very limited set of resources. The objective is to get the children acquainted with one another and get their creative juices flowing.
Instruction for students
Step 1:
The theme of the painting activity is ‘Team’ and the members make the team. Students should paint to represent their team. The painting can either be of a set of items that represent each team member separately or something that represents the team as a whole such as everyone’s common favourite sport/superhero/hobby. In either case, the painting should talk about all the members of the team.
Step 2:
Ask the students to interact within their groups to decide what they wish to paint. Interaction within their groups can be facilitated by the teacher by either creating separate chat groups for each group or by assigning time slots to each group, one after the other in the online session. Let everyone speak and listen intently. Remind them that they have to present the painting later. So, ask them to take time and understand their teammates’ likes/favourites to start with.
Step 3:
Nudge students to decide what they want to paint before they start. Ask them to plan it according to the given time period of 30 mins for painting and to use the resources judiciously.
Step 4:
Organize a presentation time for the class.
Special instructions for facilitators:
Ideation and cognition
Observe the process of ideation in each team closely. See, if they follow certain procedures for ideation. If not, keep a track of the common mistakes and discuss them later. Encourage everybody to speak, while guiding them towards a feasible idea they can easily incorporate.
Communication and teamwork
Identify the communication patterns that the students follow. Do not let anybody dominate the discussion. Identify modes and styles of communication for discussing positive styles of communication later. Use this activity to set the group norms.
Narration
Once the groups are done, have them come together and present what they have made to everyone. Praise students for coming up with a coherent and engaging presentation.
Wrapping up the session:
Inform the students regarding the resources they need to have ready for the next session to ensure they have enough time to organize it. Finally, end the session on a joyful note saying you look forward to all the amazing things children are going to create in this space!
